Amy Howe

After spending the past 3 years as the Lead Teacher in the Preschool Room and Assistant Director, Amy then moved into the position of the Director of Gan Shalom Early Childhood Program.  Amy has a passion for teaching children. She has worked in a variety of settings for more than 15 years.  This is her sixth year at Gan Shalom. Amy has received her CDA as well as her Directors Credential from the state of Kentucky. She was also awarded "Childcare Provider of the Year" from the Child Care Council of Kentucky in 2005.

We managed to convince Amy to step into the Director position and continue her positive work for the program. Amy has taken her warm and nurturing style and commitment to learning and creativity into  directing Gan Shalom and further improving our already excellent program.

Favorite Children’s book:

Oh, so many to choose from! My favorite is definitely Love You Forever, by Robert Munsch

Favorite food: I LOVE Sushi and Pizza

Tell us a little about your background:

I grew up in Macomb, IL with three brothers (who teased me non-stop) and a stepsister. Before having children of my own, I had worked in the childcare field but once I had my three boys, I wanted to devote my time to them. As my youngest son was about to enter Kindergarten, I found that I missed the preschool setting. So joining Gan Shalom to teach was a natural transition.

What do you do in your free time and for fun? How about bungee jumping?

Watching UK basketball games is one of my favorite things to do! I also like to do anything  outdoors, like hiking with my family. As for bungee jumping… I am not sure about that, but I love white water rafting!

What would you like others to know about the kids at Gan Shalom?

These children and their families are simply the BEST!! They make me smile and laugh every day. With their eagerness to learn they are all very unique and SPECIAL! They are by far the most precious children in Lexington. When someone asks me how many children I have, I like to say, "Oh, around  50 or so"
